I am a Board Certified Nurse-Midwife with more than 25 years of experience in the community as a midwife, nurse, and educator.
I began my career in nursing at a very early age, having completed my licensed practical nursing program in high school by the age of 18. It was here, while doing my ob/gyn clinical rotation that I realized I wanted to be involved in women’s health.
Before I knew it I studied nursing and nurse-midwifery at UMDNJ-SHRP, School of Nurse-Midwifery, now known as Rutgers University. From there I went on to obtain my Master’s Degree in Nursing at Columbia University, my Post Master’s Certificate from the University of Pennsylvania in Clinical Teaching, and became licensed as a massage and bodywork therapist.
I share all of this not to impress the reader but to say to you that I have been around in women’s health for quite some time now and have always been researched for answers to women’s health issues outside the currently accepted allopathic model of healthcare.
So when I developed pelvic organ prolapse like 50-80% of women do, and urinary incontinence, I looked to my medical colleagues for solutions and was not utterly surprised when I did not like the answers that were provided: surgeries to remove my uterus or to repair what was falling out.
This led me to begin my own research and upon finding the Whole Woman website and reading about Christine Kent’s work and her forum I knew that I was not alone. There were so many women out there just like me. I knew that I had to try this work out for myself so off to Brooklyn, NY I went and met with Paula Alempijevic, a Whole Woman Practitioner.
After our session, I came home and ordered Christine Kent’s book: Saving the Whole Woman and numerous DVDs.
What I discovered, and what makes Whole Woman so revolutionary, is that pelvic organ prolapse is a postural problem not a genito-urinary issue. Prolapse can be managed very successfully for a lifetime by performing a series of exercises and addressing our posture.
Kegel exercises do not work and as a matter of fact can make our situation worse. My symptoms improved so much as did the quality of my life, so much so that I signed up for Christine Kent’s practitioner training and well, here I am a Certified Whole Woman Practitioner!
I am now offering women the same guidance that Christine Kent and my mentors: Carol Bilek and Paula Alempijevic provided for me - creating individualized programs where I teach women the techniques and exercises to stabilize their symptoms and improve the quality of their lives.
Whole Woman work has been extremely fulfilling because I see these women becoming more confident in themselves, leaving their homes once again, claiming their lives as they learn to manage their symptoms.
In addition to this, I am living out my life mission: “Empowering through education and healing through therapeutic touch”.
